Sto
Kapaki is three places in one - café, lunch bistro and
taverna. You will find this unique place in the historical centre of Kalamata (the old part of the city), and we provide a cosy and warm atmosphere, delicious food to a reasonable price and a very original environment. Sto Kapaki means in direct translation "On the lid", but it can also mean "continuation". The fact is that most of our food is made under the lid, or in the oven. If you are looking for the traditional grilled and fried food, you better look elsewhere. We have neither souvlaki nor French fries. In Kapaki however you will find lovely Greek dishes, the way the Greeks like it. Our cuisine is based on the traditional Greek kitchen, but with a continental twist. Everything is made with fresh ingredients, and the host is very particular to pick out the best of everything from tomatoes and meat. Obviously in the city of Kalamata the olive oil and olives are chosen only from handpicked producers and are of the very best quality. This might cost us a little extra, but we don't mind, we are quite sure our guests appreciate the difference. Anyway, the level of prices are very reasonable, you can have a dinner with wine for € 10. Most of the main dishes cost around € 6, a salad from € 4, a glass of wine € 1,50. Have a look at the menu to get an impression about what we can offer and at which prices. Sto Kapaki locals are small and intimate, and has only eight tables in-door. If you want to make sure you will be able to find one, give us a call and make a reservation, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays this might be necessary. At our entrance to the pedestrian street Amfeias, just next to the famous Agios Apostolos church, we have seven small tables. It is a lovely, cool place to sit midday, either you want to eat something or just have a coffee or a cold beer. In the evening it is comfortable and cool in the summer months, and has a very laid back and enjoyable environment, in a part of town that is reckoned to be of the most interesting and picturesque. Our choice of music in the evening could be anything from jazz, soul, funk to 60-70 rock. Greek music might also be heard, usually in daytime. Note that the level of noise in most Greek serving places, as in ours, is unfamiliar to most foreigners. Do not expect this to be a quiet place; it is lively, noisy, but very authentic! Our opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 8 am, and we are open until our last guest has left! We can guarantee that you can order food until 11 pm, and probably much later. Sundays closed. Sto Kapaki is owned and run by a Greek-Norwegian couple, where HE is making the food and the atmosphere (e.g. he does all the work), while SHE is taking care of the finances (e.g. collects the money). Maybe not a typical Greek way to do things, but anyway, this is not an ordinary place run by ordinary people! We wish to see you soon in Sto Kapaki! Toya and Thanassis |
